Kelly Maly - Seniors Real Estate Specialist®

Recognizing special needs of senior citizens, real estate professionals and the Senior Advantage Real Estate Council have created the designation, Seniors Real Estate Specialist®. Agents who carry the SRES® designation have received special training and carry the expertise necessary to navigate the issues that face senior customers. Kelly Says....

For some people, work is just work.  For me, it is a different story.  I started working with seniors because of my grandmother.  She was a great role model for me throughout my life.  As she aged, she left her house for an apartment.  When that was too much, she left the apartment to move in with me and my husband.  Through all this I saw how she was treated… in some cases with great patience and care, in other cases she was not given the consideration that she deserved.  I could see there was a need for professionals who were understanding and sensitive to the concerns of an older person.

Today’s younger generations are very mobile…moving from job to job and state to state.  Emotional attachments don’t grow as strong.  For a senior who has been in the same house for 50 years, raised kids, and enjoyed retirement, it’s not easy to leave.  So much of life is tied to this home and moving means leaving all the memories behind.  It also can be difficult to accept that age has brought some limitations.  Family and friends are often aware, but an outsider generally can’t appreciate all that is involved.

Being a part of a senior’s everyday life really helped open my eyes.  The big issues are obvious to almost anyone, but all the little things that add up aren’t so easily seen until you live it.  I hope that my experiences have given me the insight to better understand how much is involved and the ability to make it easier.  My dedication to seniors is a tribute to my grandma who focused so much of her energy on helping other people.
